The Roofing Process
Curious what to expect when you’re getting a new roof? Once the contract is signed, we get to work on the roofing process.
- Our friendly customer service representative will schedule your roofing days.
- We’ll take care of obtaining any necessary permits.
- You’ve already made your selections, so we order the shingles and other materials.
- On the day of your reroof, we start by protecting your siding and landscaping with tarps.
- We have to completely remove your current roof before we can start with your new one.
- The first layers that we put down are the ice and water shield and underlayment to protect the wood decking.
- Our team then installs the asphalt shingles you selected.
- We will replace or add vents and flashing as needed.
- Then we thoroughly clean up the job site.
- We check in to be sure you’re 100% satisfied.

Shingles, Metal, and Flat RoofsÂ
Oaks Construction has knowledge and experience installing asphalt shingles, metal roofs, and flat roofs of TPO and EPDM.
Most houses have asphalt shingle roofs. Asphalt shingles are a great choice because they come in a variety of colors and styles that look great on virtually every roof, regardless of the style of the house. They are weather-resistant and cost-effective. For added drama, try architectural shingles!

Flat roofs are generally found on commercial buildings with very low slopes. Roofing materials for these roofs are thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO) and ethylene propylene diene terpolymer (EPDM). They are both extremely sturdy and long-lasting.

How do I know if I need a new roof?
Common signs that indicate the need for roof replacement are:
- Missing, buckled, or damaged shingles on roof

Do I have to choose the same shingles that are on my roof now?
We use the Hover app to take pictures of your roof for measurements. The app creates a 3D rendering of your home that you can use to “try on” different styles, textures, and colors of shingles and siding on the roof.Â
You are also welcome to visit our showroom in Spencerport to view samples of materials. Then, you can choose the roofing shingles you like best!
How long will my new roof last?
Asphalt shingle roofs generally last about 20 years before they need to be replaced. Metal roofs can last 40-70 years.
How much will my roof replacement cost?
The cost of a new roof depends on several factors:
- The size of the roof
- The shingles and materials you choose for the roof
- Number of layers to remove from current roof
- Roof style and slope
- Condition of roof deck (if decking boards need replacement)
- Chimneys and vents on roof
It is nearly impossible to put together a definitive price of a new roof until all of the factors are considered.

What is the new roof installation process like?
Shortly before installation day, some of the roofing materials and a dumpster will be delivered to your home.Â
These are the steps we take on the day of your roofing installation:
- Cover siding & landscaping with tarps
- Remove the old roof
- Replace any rotten decking boards
- Apply roofing felt, ice and water shield, and drip edge
- Apply shingles
- Install vents & flashing
- Clean the job site

What should I do to prepare for my roof installation?
Clear any obstacles, including vehicles, away from your house and driveway. This allows our team space for a dumpster, materials, and work. The roof installation is usually done in a day or two, so the inconvenience won’t last long.
Will a new roof add value to my home?
Yes, it will! According to the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI), new roofing is the number one exterior feature that appeals to buyers. They further report that 109% of the value of a new roof is recovered from the project. Believe it or not, you could actually make money on your new roof!
Is a new roof tax deductible?
Roof replacement is considered a home improvement and, as such, is not tax deductible.
Will a new roof save me money on my homeowners insurance?
This is a question for your insurance carrier. Depending on your policy, you could get a 5% to 30% discount for a new roof installation.
