Early Mound Builders, the Erie people, and later the Iroquois (more particularly, the Seneca) were likely the first groups to live in the village that is now Fredonia. Robert Morris bought the land in Fredonia from Massachusetts in 1791 and later sold it to the Holland Land Company. Around 1800, parcels were traded off to pioneers.
The first higher education facility in Chautauqua County was founded by the Fredonia Academy in 1824 and debuted in 1826. In 1866, the institution changed its name to State Normal School. Hermann Cooper, the Normal School’s director, purchased 58 acres of property west of Central Avenue in 1930 with the hope that it would one day be turned into a campus. In 1939, a music building was built, and the Feinberg Law transformed the Normal School into a teacher’s college in 1942. The college joined the State University of New York (SUNY) system in 1948 and quickly rose to prominence.
